Every analytics vendor in 2026 claims AI. The capability label has expanded to mean almost anything — predictive models, natural language interfaces, automated alerting, generative summaries. Three diligence questions separate vendors with real capability from vendors with marketing.
Question 1: Where does the AI run, and what data trains it?
The follow-up that distinguishes serious vendors:
- Is the model running on your data, or on a generic foundation model that's never seen healthcare?
- If the model was trained on healthcare data, was it trained on your organization's data or on aggregated industry data? (Both are legitimate; the answer matters for performance and for governance.)
- If the answer involves an LLM provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google), how does PHI flow? Is it sent to the provider? Is there a BAA in place with the provider? Is data retained for training?
The vendor that can answer these crisply is operating in a different governance posture than the one that says “our AI is HIPAA compliant” without a follow-up.
Question 2: What does the model do with uncertainty?
Real medical questions have ambiguous answers. A vendor demo that always produces a confident answer to every question is hiding the failure modes. Better questions:
- What does the model say when it doesn't have enough data to answer?
- Are answers cited back to source data, so a clinical user can verify?
- Are there guardrails against hallucinated medical claims?
The vendors with mature AI capabilities will explain their uncertainty model. The ones without will pivot to a feature list.
Question 3: What's the audit trail?
Every AI-produced answer must be auditable. The audit needs:
- Who asked the question, when, from what session.
- What data the model used to answer.
- What the answer was.
- Whether and how a human acted on it.
