Carequality: National Health Data Exchange Framework

Carequality is a national framework for health data exchange operated by The Sequoia Project. It defines technical specifications and a common Trust Bundle that allow EHR vendors, HIEs, and other implementers to exchange data with each other.

What Carequality enables

Carequality-implementer organizations agree to a common set of policies (Carequality Connected Agreement) and technical specifications. Once connected, an implementer can query and retrieve documents from any other Carequality implementer. Epic operates the largest Carequality network through its Care Everywhere connectivity.

Carequality vs CommonWell vs TEFCA

  • Carequality — large Epic-anchored exchange network; spec-driven; includes a CommonWell bridge.
  • CommonWell — vendor-led network founded by non-Epic EHR vendors; QHIN-designated under TEFCA.
  • TEFCA — federal framework that supersedes the historical Carequality vs CommonWell split with a single Common Agreement.

Where Vizier fits

Vizier's EHR connectors read the consolidated patient record the EHR holds — including documents pulled in via Carequality, CommonWell, or QHIN exchange. Patients with care across multiple Carequality-connected health systems show up as one longitudinal record in the analytics layer.
